SF/F/H preferences:
[This information is all tentative until I figure out whether the person who wrote it is trustworthy or just a pretentious liar.]
I write a little SF but am only moderately happy with it. I havn't written any horror yet but am open to it if a really terrifying idea occurs to me (William Hope Hodkin's The House of the Boarderland scared the stuffing out of me when I read it.)
I consider a lot of the stories I write to be fantasy even though others might not agree with me. I'm willing to call a story fantasy based upon its overall tone even when only everyday actions occur. Two people playfully interpreting the universe of a mini-golf course as they are putting through it could be a fantasy if they are imaginative enough. I'm not sure how many would agree.
I like to read (and review) stories with compelling characters, setting, plot. Theodore Sturgeon was an early influence who taught me not to be afraid of strong emotion in a story and that it was worth trying to learn to write fearlessly. That's a lesson I'm still learning.
