New Book from a Critter Member

**NOW IN PRINT EDITION TOO!** Awesome new book, HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SPECULATIVE FICTION OPENINGS, from a Critter member who's unearthed a shard of The Secret to becoming a pro writer. Really good piece of work. "...if you're at all concerned about story openings, you'd be nuts not to read what Qualkinbush has to say." —Wil McCarthy, author of BLOOM and THE COLLAPSIUM

How to Write SF

The Craft of Writing Science Fiction that Sells by Ben Bova, best-selling author and six-time Hugo Award winner for Best Editor. (This is one of the books your ol' Critter Captain learned from himself, and I highly recommend it.) (Also via Amazon)

Interviewed!

I was interviewed live on public radio for Critters' birthday, for those who want to listen.

Submit a Critique

You may submit critiques either using this form or by email (don't forget the "#" and the manuscript number in the Subject).

Reminders... Remember to follow the standard critique format... You should abide by Critters' Diplomacy Standard at all times... All critiques are available to all members to read on the following Saturday if you want to see what others said.

Workshop:

Your Workshop password:

Your E-mail address (If this is wrong, you won't get any credit!):

Your Name:

Manuscript Number : #
(Here is the queue, if you want to check on or copy&paste numbers, titles, names, etc.)

Manuscript Title :
(The title and author's name help me file things if, despite your best efforts, you typed in the wrong ms#.)

Manuscript Author's Name:

Is this intended for credit (if you only have a small number of comments, say no)? Yes      No

Would you like a copy of your critique emailed to you for your files? Yes      No

For sure      Not sure —I'm sure you've remembered to follow the Critters Diplomatic Phrasing rules, but just checking. [Such as not speaking in anger, not speaking as an expert, not saying "readers/editors/publishers (don't) like...", no "teacher's voice," not stating opinions as fact....; just relaying your personal reactions to the piece, framed as your opinion (absolutely including thoughts on elements that didn't work for you, but without vehemence or trying to persuade).]

Text of your critique

We have two methods to submit the text of your critique:

1) Try the file upload if your browser supports file transfers and you've saved your manuscript to a text (not Word/etc.) file...

(You might want to check it first, to make sure it's in the right format; then come back here.)

Critique (plain/ASCII/DOS text!) filename to send:

-Or-

2) You can copy&paste your critique in the box below, if your browser does not support file uploads, or you're trying to copy and paste directly from a text editing / word processing app. (Or if you just want to type the critique in right here... that's... ok... but I really don't recommend it, since a slip of the fingers or a browser crash can lose all your work. It's really best to type into some file first, save it out, then copy&paste into this box.) And definitely be sure you have a copy somewhere before you hit submit in case of a browser or web site problem. Note that this box won't hold a critique longer than about 6,000 words; though that's far longer than most critiques):
