Okay, this is really ancient, and most people just visit http://webnews.sff.net
for the sff.net group, but the below is left here in case it helps someone.
Note this only relates to the old sff.net newsgroups, not the new forums at
www.critique.org/forums that you can access here to automatically log you in.

===========

How to read SFF.Net newsgroups (such as the Critters newsgroups) if you
clicked on the links on the resources page and it gave you an error.

There are many ways to read the sff.* newsgroups, such as via Netscape (2.0
or above), MS Internet Explorer, Free Agent, NewsXpress, or others
listed on sff.net's web page. There is a link on their page with information
especially for AOL members.

If you've tried using netscape to visit a "news://..." link and it
said no way, you may not have installed the Netscape component that
allows newsreading. (Called "Collabra discussion groups".) In my 4.05
version of Netscape, it's under the "Communicator" menu at the top. If
you don't see it there, chances are you didn't install that component.
You might go back to however you initially installed netscape and look
for that.

The other alternative is to point your browser to www.sff.net and navigate
their links until you come to their browser-based newsreader. As of this
writing there is a "Newsgroups" link on their main page.
