Why we want to know who you are

Why do we care who you are?

Because writers are touchy about strangers reading their work.

I realize the net is a mostly anonymous place, and, indeed, I founded and ran for ten years what I believe was the world's first cost-free public access internet service provider; there I allowed folks to have anonymous usernames, and I protected identities fiercely. I'm not, per se, opposed to pen names and such.

However, Critters is one of those other kinds of net communities, where anonymity is not comfortable. Critters is more like a face-to-face writers' workshop where everyone knows who everyone else is. In other words, would you trust your unpublished work with people who won't even tell you their name? Critters requires a certain amount of trust on everyone's part. That begins with being honest about who you are.

I thus suggest you look around the Critters site a little more until you become comfortable enough to give your real name.

This is just the way Critters is, so if you're uncomfortable with the way we operate, I suggest you look over the workshops web page for the locations of other workshops you might prefer.
